Washington, D.C., Nov. 1, 2004 - The Voice of America's daily Persian-language television program News and Views will air a special one-hour election night television broadcast from 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 to 12:30 a.m. EST (8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in Iran) on Nov. 3 as part of its expanded coverage of the 2004 U.S. elections.
"Because of the enormous interest in this election around the world, we're adding expanded broadcasts to several areas, including Iran," said VOA Director David Jackson. "No international broadcaster knows or can explain the United States as well as we do."
News and Views, which is hosted by VOA journalists Setareh Sieg and Anoush Kangarloo, will feature live reports from the headquarters of President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry, a special report from Los Angeles on voting in the nation's largest Iranian community, analysis of election results, and headlines on voting throughout the United States.
News and Views' daily news show will also be expanded from its usual 30 minutes to a full hour of election coverage from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST (8:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. in Iran) on election day, Nov. 2. As part of its coverage, the program will examine the international issues that have dominated the U.S. presidential campaign, the role of the electoral college, and reports from both the Republican and Democratic headquarters.
VOA broadcasts three Persian-language TV programs to Iran. News and Views is a daily, 30-minute television news show broadcast via satellite to audiences in Iran; Roundtable With You is a weekly 90-minute discussion show; and Next Chapter is a weekly youth newsmagazine show. These television shows complement VOA Persian's daily radio service and Radio Farda, a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, youth-oriented radio program that is a joint project of VOA and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
